Invigilation

Exam invigilation at Essex is a part-time appointment working mainly during May and June however we do have other exams during the year, you will need to be flexible in your working hours but reliable and committed to supporting students at a stressful time. We require staff to be able to give a minimum availability of two days per week.

Please note, applications from undergraduate and postgraduate students for any of these positions will not be considered (PhD students can apply).

  • Dates and times


    • The main examination period runs from Monday 9 May to Friday 3 June 2016
    • Exams take place from Monday to Saturday
    • Invigilators usually work several shifts a week with no more than two a day
    • All newly employed invigilators will be required to attend a training session (approximately three hours) prior to the start of the examination season
    • Senior invigilators should be able to work more regular hours, possibly every day
    • Shifts are normally 8.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 5.30pm*

    *Finish times are approximate and may be earlier or later than stated

  • Duties


    • Senior invigilators are responsible for a single venue and are assisted by invigilators where necessary
    • All invigilation staff are responsible for the good order of examinations and for ensuring that all the candidates enjoy the optimum conditions for sitting their examinations
    • Invigilators' duties include setting out exam papers and materials in the rooms before exams
    • Invigilating during the exams
    • Collecting scripts at the end

  • Eligibility

    Essential experience, skills and attributes

    • relevant work experience (paid or unpaid)
    • effective communication skills (oral and written), with a good command of English
    • be reliable and trustworthy with excellent timekeeping skills
    • good interpersonal skills and a calm and friendly manner
    • an ability to establish good working relationships with a wide range of people
    • adaptability and flexibility
    • a very methodical, meticulous and conscientious approach to his/her work
    • the experience and personal authority necessary to take charge in cases of a crisis, such as a fire alarm or student illness (for senior invigilator)

    In addition, a commitment to be available for the duration of the main examination period from 9 May to 3 June 2016 is required.

    Desirable experience, skills and attributes

    • experience of higher education, including exam invigilation or supervision
    • experience of working with students
    • knowledge and experience of supervising staff (for senior invigilator)

  • Payment

    £8.33 per hour.
