TitleEducation Insights: Lessons from group work on Zoom – bringing Compassion into the proceedings
CategoryProfessional development
OverviewThis session will propose a way in which lecturers can capitalise upon the commonly reported student experience of discomfort in online group work in the last academic year. Embedding 'compassionate group management skills' into our teaching could potentially alleviate the distress in online (and offline) group work reported by some students, through clarification of expectations in order to focus engagement whilst simultaneously encouraging learners to be more mindful and inclusive in their interactions. The 'compassionate group management skills' noted here are taken from Gilbert's (2016) research findings related to Compassion-focussed Pedagogy (CfP). These findings, as well as evidencing an improvement in group work interaction and cohesiveness, suggest a clear link between the teaching and application of the micro-skills of compassionate group work at undergraduate level for credit and increased well-being, sense of belonging, attainment levels and capacity for critical thinking (Gilbert, 2016). Learning outcomes By the end of the session, participants will have: 1. Learnt what compassion means in an education context 2. Been introduced to Gilbert’s (2016) compassionate group management skills 3. Seen an example of how to embed such skills in a module and assess them 4. Considered the usefulness of such an approach to your own teaching (and be encouraged to share your ideas through a dedicated webpage) Who should attend? Individuals who are interested in finding out how to improve their students’ interaction in small group and seminar work whilst also improving their sense of well-being, sense of belonging and attainment levels. Please note this session will be delivered via Zoom.
