26 November 2015: ‘The Primacy of Society over State and Market: Post-Liberalism and Paradoxical Politics’ (Departmental Seminar Series)

Dr Adrian Pabst from University of Kent

At 16:00 in Room 6.345.

Much of modern and contemporary politics views the state and the market as the dominant institutions. Accordingly, civil society is largely confined to the voluntary, third sector where the state does not reach and where the market sees no profit. What do you think?

The Speaker
Drawing on the work of Karl Polanyi and French ‘economic anthropology’, Dr Adrian Pabst, Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Kent, will argue that the current crisis of the liberal ‘market-state’ opens new opportunities for a paradoxical politics. Such a politics blends a ‘progressive’ commitment to greater economic equality and democratic participation with a more ‘conservative’ disposition emphasising work, loyalty, family and locality.
