20 March 2015: Giving social science a voice

How can we get the government to value social science? Can social scientists be smarter about accessing funding? In what ways are social scientists impeding their own success? These were a number of questions discussed at the Campaign for Social Science Essex roadshow this month.

A new report, The Business of People: The Significance of Social Science Over The Next Decade published by the Campaign on 24 February, featured in the event. Stephen Anderson, Director of the Campaign for Social Science and David Walker, Head of Policy for Academy and Campaign, began by discussing the value of social science to the UK economy and society, along with recommendations on how others can see this value, including creating a Chief Social Scientist post in Government to increasing funding for social science activities.

Executive Dean for the Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Todd Landman then commented on the report, on behalf of Essex, showing our commitment to social science. He said: “We were excited to welcome the Campaign to Essex, and share with Stephen Anderson and David Walker all of the many research and education strengths of the faculty, as well as the way in which we are working with other disciplines. We support the recommendations in the report and look forward to contributing to the campaign for the future.”
