03 February 2015: Professor Elson joins David Dimbleby on panel discussing Coalition
Professor Diane Elson from the Department of Sociology and Chair of the Women's Budget Group will join television presenter David Dimbleby to help the University of Essex celebrate its reputation as a world-leader in the social sciences.
Mr Dimbleby is chairing a panel discussion featuring leading Essex academics, including Professor Elson, at the British Academy in London.
The panel discussion ‘Coalition:Devil’s pact or dream match’ on Tuesday 3 February is one of the highlights of a week of events from Monday 2 February to Friday 6 February organised to celebrate the University’s 50th anniversary and focusing on its strengths in politics, economics and sociology. It will look at the impact of the Coalition government and is aimed at policy-makers, social commentators and alumni.
At the Colchester Campus on Wednesday 4 February, Professor Anthony King and the Rt Hon Bernard Jenkin MP will be part of a discussion open to the public and chaired by Professor Todd Landman looking at the political issues which are likely to shape the upcoming General Election.
On Monday 2 February, the Colchester Campus welcomed Colchester Garrison Commander Colonel Gary Wilkinson OBE to talk about the world situation after Afghanistan and Iraq, chaired by Professor Landman, and also featuring Professor Han Dorussen and Doctor Natasha Ezrow from the Department of Government.
The week highlights the strength of Essex research in the social sciences with political science ranked first in the UK and economics ranked fifth in the recent Research Excellence Framework .
The London panel will also include Professor Paul Whiteley from the Department of Government, Professor Shamit Saggar, Professor of Public Policy at the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Professor Tom Scotto, from the Department of Government.
Other events will include a speed networking session for students to find out more about career opportunities linked to the social sciences, supported by alumni and leading organisations and companies.
