02 February 2015: Former PhD student awarded Georg Eckert Research Prize

A prize recognising outstanding work in the field of international educational media research has been awarded to Simona Szakács, former PhD student in the Department of Sociology.

Simona examined the developments in Romania’s education system following the political upheaval of 1989. One of the themes explored in her work asked how the perception of Europe, now being conveyed to Romanian pupils, shapes their sense of self as Romanians.

The chair of the jury Professor Beatrice Ziegler recognised that Simona “had made an important contribution to understanding the transformation of educational systems in European, post-communist countries, because she had explored the revisions at each level – from the ministry of education to actual lessons – and examined how they correlated with each other.”

The Georg Eckert Research Prize is awarded every two years by the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, and is sponsored by the Westermann publishing group.
