03 November 2014: Doctoral training partnership to support hundreds of PhD students

The seven members of a new consortium including the University of Essex have together committed to awarding up to 375 PhD studentships in the arts and humanities over the next five years.

One of 11 new doctoral training partnerships (DTPs) in the UK, the Consortium of the Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE) is enrolling its first students this month.

Funded by a £17m award from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and more than £10m from its seven partner institutions (Courtauld Institute of Art, Goldsmiths, University of London, the Open University, and the Universities of East Anglia, Essex, Kent and Sussex), CHASE aims to create a research environment that supports a new generation of doctoral students in creating their own cultures of research and practice.

Professor Eddy Higgs, CHASE academic lead at Essex, said: “We are proud to be part of CHASE and to work with our partners to nurture the next generation of world-leading arts and humanities scholars. We encourage our students to be brave, inventive and rigorous while asking difficult questions and challenging convention. CHASE combines a commitment to these vital values with a passion for pushing forward the boundaries of creative practice, digital technologies and media forms.”

Professor Vicky Lebeau, CHASE Director and a Professor of English at the University of Sussex, said: “With 74 students joining us in October, the signing of the Consortium agreement could not be better timed.

“CHASE represents a substantial investment in the arts and humanities and I look forward to working together to develop our doctoral research programme.”

The CHASE Strategy Board, formed of senior representatives from each institution, began their meeting at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London earlier this month with the official signing of the CHASE agreement.
