15 August 2012: Sociology graduate wins the Criminology Book Prize 2012

Book cover of Analysing Police Interviews: Laughter, Confessions and the Tape

Congratualtions to Dr Elisabeth Carter who has won the British Society of Criminology's Criminology Book Prize 2012 for her recently published book Analysing Police Interviews: Laughter, Confessions and the Tape (Continuum).

Elisabeth's work investigated the role laughter plays in police interviews and the interaction between suspects and officers, for example whether laughter by a suspect meant they were telling the truth or not.

After completing a BA in Psycholinguistics and MA in criminological research at Essex, Elisabeth was awarded a full Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) scholarship for her postgraduate studies in our Department and was twice awarded the David Lockwood Prize for best masters dissertation.

Elisabeth is now a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at Buckinghamshire New University but remains a Visiting Fellow of our Department. She also takes on consultancy work around police and authorised officer training in investigative interviewing, language as evidence, rapport-building and body language.
