29 March 2012: Annual Sociology A-Level Conference welcomes students to Colchester Campus

Conference programme

Today, Thursday 29 March, we are welcoming around 400 sixth form students from across Essex to the Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall, on the Colchester Campus, for our Annual Sociology A-Level Conference.

Following a welcome from Professor Eamonn Carrabine, Head of Department, the students will hear from one of our leading professors, Ken Plummer, on The Sociological Imagination in the Twenty First Century among others. After lunch they will have a choice of lectures to attend that gives them a taste of what studying at university would be like, including:

The students, who come from a range of colleges across Essex, are either already studying or are looking to study sociology as a degree subject. The conference is a unique opportunity for them to experience learning at a university, to meet students from other colleges and learn from some our leading academics.

The day culminates with brief talks from the University of Essex Students' Union about life of campus and being an undergraduate student, from Rob Webb the Chief Examiner and Ian Thompson, Vice Principle from Colchester Sixth Form College.

The conference is also a great opportunity for our department to speak to students and learn about the topics within sociology that they are most interested in.
