25 May 2011: Sociology Alumna wins Asian Women of Achievement Award

Dr Aisha Gill

Essex graduate Dr Aisha Gill, now a lecturer in criminology at Roehampton University, has been named “Professional of the Year” at the Asian Women of Achievement Awards 2011.

Dr Gill, who gained her PhD from Essex in 2002 after completing a BA and MA at the University, is a respected activist and academic in the areas of health and criminal justice responses to violence against black, minority ethnic, and refugee women in the UK. In recent years she has provided expert advice to the Government, Ministry of Justice, Scotland Yard, Crown Prosecution Service, and the voluntary sector on legal policy issues related to so-called ‘honour killings’ and forced marriages.

The award recognises professionals who have become leading practitioners in their chosen field, setting an example to other women and having their contributions recognised by their peers.
