The University of Essex has become one of only 21 Doctoral Training Centres (DTC) accredited by the UK Economic and Social Research Council following a highly competitive selection process.

Our Department plays a leading role in the Essex DTC. We offer four pathways in the following areas:

  • Sociological Research
  • Survey Methodology
  • Longitudinal Social Research
  • Criminology and Socio-Legal Research (with law; subject to final approval by Senate)
  • Global Challenges

We also collaborate with pathways in:

  • Human Rights and Research Methods
  • Environmental Governance
  • Research Methods in Health

Some of these pathways are therefore interdisciplinary and are offered in conjunction with the Institute for Social and Economic Research and the Departments of Law, Government, Biological Sciences, Human Rights Centre, and the School of Health and Human Sciences.

We encourage expressions of interest and applications from students and can offer doctoral supervision across many substantive topics, which could be combined with a training pathway (1+3 model) or based directly on your research (+3 model). Our particular research and supervisory strengths include:

  • Criminology and social justice
  • Culture and media
  • Economic sociology
  • Ethnicity, migration and rights
  • Intimacy and gender
  • Science in society
  • Social theory and methodology
  • Survey methodology
