Annual Graduate Conference

Jules Pretty

Our Annual Graduate Conference is a major event in our Department, and an integral part of your postgraduate experience.

The conference takes place in April every year at the Westcliff Hotel, Southend-On-Sea. It brings us together to share our work, discuss ideas and make new connections, drawing on the wide range of research currently going on in the department.

The programme is put together each year by a small planning group of students and staff. We encourage creative thinking in the range of presentation formats and endeavour to include skills-based sessions alongside theoretical ones. In previous years for example, these have focused on dissertation writing, preparing for vivas and first publications.

The conference gives you the chance to meet with fellow students and staff in an informal but intellectually stimulating environment and to make new friends.

Join the planning group

The conference programme is developed by a small group of Masters and PhD students who are recruited in the Autumn term, together with our Graduate Directors of Research and Taught programmes and our Student Support Services Officer.

Being part of the planning group is not heavily time-consuming and allows you to have a real impact on programme content, both intellectual and social.

If you are interested in joining, or would like to find out more, contact Rowena Macaulay at rowena@essex.ac.uk.

Past conferences

The conference has been running since 2002. The archive of conference programmes will give you a sense of its changing character and themes over the years.
