Online Applications: Guidance and Notes for Applicants

Guidance for applying for research postgraduate study

Throughout the online application process, applicants will see 'help' links. If you are in doubt as to what to enter in a particular question, or section, please refer to the help link provided.

Each academic department, school, or centre has varying entrance requirements.

Listed below are the requirements for all departments, schools and centres. This information will also be given in the Document Upload section of your online application, as a reminder of what you need to provide.

You may choose to upload documentation online, or to e-mail, fax, or post it to us, at later date - whichever suits you best. However, please note that we will be unable to consider applications until we are in possession of all of the required documentation.

Further questions and enquries should be addressed to our Postgraduate Admissions Office (e-mail: pgquery@essex.ac.uk.

Academic references

To support your application, you should provide two verifiable references.

These should be from academics who have knowledge of your academic ability through having taught or supervised you, and should include a positive recommendation that you are suitable for the course that you are applying for. We expect a reference to provide us with an informed and academic assessment of an applicant's suitability for postgraduate study in a specific field.

The references should be recent and dated, normally referring to your current or most recent programme of study, at undergraduate level or above, and should be written in English.

The references should be verifiable, that is, signed and on letterhead paper (a scanned copy is acceptable) from a recognised institution, or, if sent by email from a UK institution, then originating from an 'ac.uk' email address. If sent by email from a non-UK institution, then it should originate from an official email account (e-mails originating from services provided by Yahoo, Gmail or Hotmail, for example, will not be accepted).

If you are unable to obtain an academic reference because you have not been in education for over five years, then please provide a reference from your employer, or someone else who can comment on your skills and suitability for the course. The Admissions Selector will determine if this is acceptable, and we will contact you if we require further information.

Please note that, in individual cases and at the discretion of the Admissions Selector, we may ask you to provide an additional reference to support your application.
