Your studies and Tier 4

Changing your Tier 4 Sponsor to the University of Essex to start your course in the Autumn term 2020

If you have already been studying in the UK with a Tier 4 sponsor and you would like to come to the University of Essex to finish your studies or to start a new course, you must make sure you know what you must do regarding your visa to register and commence your course with us.

The Home Office Tier 4 Policy Guidance gives full details on what you must do if you want to take the same or a different course of study in the UK with a new Tier 4 sponsor.

Students who commence study with a different Tier 4 Sponsor, who have not made an application to the Home Office to study with their new Tier 4 Sponsor would be in breach of their immigration conditions, unless exceptions apply in Tier 4 guidance.

What you must do if you are in the UK

If you are already in the UK as a Tier 4 (General) student and would like to change to study at the University of Essex, you must have made a new, valid Tier 4 (General) application using the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) issued by us. Before applying in the UK you must check if you are eligible, this will depend on your current sponsors Tier 4 status and the length of time between the expiry date of your current visa and your new course start date (as stated on your new CAS).

We recommend reading the following UKCISA guidance for more information:

If you are not eligible to apply in the UK you will have to apply in your country of residence overseas. If you’ve read all this information and aren’t sure if you can apply in the UK, contact our Admissions team at vquery@essex.ac.uk for advice.

What you must do if you are overseas

Apply for new Tier 4 Entry Clearance using your University of Essex CAS, once you receive a successful outcome and your Entry Clearance sticker has been placed in your passport, you’ll be able to arrange to travel into the UK. If you won’t be able to enter the UK by the Latest Accept Date shown on your CAS, please contact our Admissions team at vquery@essex.ac.uk.
