Returning student

Students meeting

Are you returning to continue your studies? You must register at the start of each academic year. We're here to welcome you back with all the help and advice you'll need.

As a new student there are three important steps you need to complete before you start attending your course.

Before you arrive

Step 1: Obtain your Essex login details

Step 2: Complete online registration

It will take around ten minutes to complete and means that you'll have already done this part when you attend the registration event - more time to have fun!

As part of the process, you will check and update personal details for your University record, update your address and emergency contact information, and you will also have the opportunity to upload a photograph for your University student card.

When you arrive

Step 3: Attend the registration event

  • You will need to bring some photo identification (ID) with you when you attend the registration event, so we can verify that you are definitely you!  Check out our guidance on accepted forms of ID at registration below.
  • As well as your ID, you should also bring along the following, as you may be asked to provide evidence at the registration event:
    • original certificates of your qualifications (if our Admissions team have asked to see them)
    • documents relating to how you are paying your tuition fees (e.g. confirmation of funding from Student Loan Company, bursary or scholarships or other sponsirship)
  • Acceptable ID at Registration

As a new student we are required to complete a right to study check for you, so we can make sure you have a right to study in the UK and to make sure that it is definitely you registering and not someone on your behalf.

We would prefer to see photographic identification (ID), but we do understand that not all of you may have this. Other forms of ID for UK/EEA nationals are acceptable when combined; please use the list below to make sure you bring in the right documents when you register.

    UK/EEA nationals

    Acceptable ID is one of:

    • British Passport
    • Passport of an EEA national (including Switzerland)
    • National identity card of an EEA national (including Switzerland)

    or

    two of:

    • Birth certificate stating name(s) of parents
    • Full/provisional UK driving licence
    • National insurance card or confirmation letter
    • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
    • Student Loans Company confirmation letter for the current academic year

Please note: we may accept other forms of identification, depending on individual circumstances and at the discretion of the Registration Manager.

    Non UK/EEA nationals

If you are not a UK or EEA national, you are required to provide a combination of documents from the list below depending on your status.

    • Passport
    • Visa
    • Vignette
    • BRP
    • Home office letter

Please bring everything you have if you are unsure or refer to the visa checks at registration information on the immigration section of our website for more information.
