Students' parking

On some days it can be difficult to find a parking bay, so please do consider cycling, walking or using the local bus service. You can plan your journey here, alternatively check out the facilities and discounted tickets available to you. It takes 9 minutes from Wivenhoe Rail Station to campus and 19 minutes to Greenstead by bus, so if you take advantage of the Unicard bus ticket (available from the Student Union reception) it can cost you as little as £1 per day to travel to campus.

Students living off campus and disabled students are able to register for vehicle parking on campus. As parking spaces are limited, students living on campus may not register their vehicle unless they can evidence a medical or caring need, applications must be made to Student Support.

Parking permits and payments

Parking registration is a quick and simple process. Follow the processes on this page to find out all you need to know on car parking at the university.

  • Real-time parking registration and number plate recognition

Our system is paperless and will operate on a real-time basis and enforcement by automatic number plate recognition. Our Traffic Officers will use handheld ANPR to manage enforcement.

  • No windscreen permit stickers or pay and display tickets!

You'll no longer need to display a permit sticker in your windscreen, as everything will be based on number plate recognition.

Car parks which were previously pay and display will be pay and go. You pay on arrival, but no longer need to display a ticket.

Where you can park

Car Park A is a designated student-only car park. On occasion the car park may also be required for coach and mini bus parking. This will be advertised in advance where possible. There are also 170 parking spaces designated for students in the Valley car park.

Students may not park in the Wivenhoe House and Constable Building car park, the Innovation Centre, the multi-storey car park, or in parking spaces under podia. (without prior authorisation from the Student Support Disability Team).

Disabled parking

If you are a disabled driver you can apply for a parking space near your residence and under the podia (the service road which runs underneath the University). These spaces are limited and can only be offered to blue badge holders. If you're not a blue badge holder, but have a mobility difficulty please contact the Student Services Hub. If you have successfully applied for a disabled parking space, the Estate Management Helpdesk.

You will have to pay both a registration fee for the allocated space. Please remember any vehicles parked in designated spaces will need to displaying a blue badge or have prior authorisation.

For queries about disabled parking, contact the Information Centre

Annual parking registration

Registering your vehicle entitles you to cheaper pay and display parking charges. If you want to park on campus but are not registered, you will need to pay and display at the full visitor rate.

  • Registration process

You can register your vehicle at any time during the year, but all permits expire in the first week of October. You must re-register in October each year.

The registration process is administered by the Estates Management Helpdesk.

    Documentary evidence

We do not need you to provide your vehicle documents at registration. You just need to tick the declaration to let us know that your documents and driving licence are in order and confirm that you have a roadworthy vehicle. Estate Management may request sight of your car documents at any time during registration. Failure to provide requested documentation may result in your registration being withdrawn.

If you move onto campus you must cancel your parking registration. Daily automated checks are made to identify any resident student who applies for registration or who already has registration and has not surrendered it when they moved onto campus.

Parking enforcement

Our University operates a car parking enforcement scheme and will issue a Parking Charge Notice for contraventions, so should you decide to park on campus then you’re agreeing to our rules and regulations for driving, parking and registering. You’re responsible for paying for parking and parking appropriately. Parking Charge Notices require a payment of £20 per notice reduced to £10 is paid within 14 days of payment.

These rules are made to manage demand, support the University’s travel plan and ensure the safety and availability of spaces, where possible, in the car parks. It also ensures that there is a clear and fair process for parking on campus.

The University is private property. On every entrance (at either end of Boundary Road and on Capon Road) there is a contract to enter sign which you agree to when you enter Boundary and Capon Road to campus as it is private land. In the car parks you can read our full terms and conditions.

  • Parking rules and fines

You are not eligible to register for discounted parking if you reside on campus.

Your vehicle needs to be authorised to park on campus. To be authorised you need to either:

    • pay the visitor tariff for your required parking, or
    • have registered your vehicle and pre-paid for your parking or paid for the duration of your parking at a pay station

In each new academic year (October to September), you will be given one warning if you contravene our Rules and Regulations for the Driving, Parking and Registration of Vehicles on Campus. All subsequent breaches in the same year will result in a PCN being issued.

  • Administering parking tickets

The University is an Approved Operator and administers an in-house parking enforcemnet scheme. As a member of the International Parking Community (IPC) we are governed by a strict code of practice. The University is able to request Keeper of a Vehicle details to make contact about contraventions.

  • Issuing parking tickets

An automatic number plate recognition system is in place and this automatically alerts the University of any contravention so that we can issue a Parking Charge Notice.

Our parking team issue notices for contraventions that they observe. The Parking Charge Notice is applied to the windscreen, for the driver, to take action. Data regarding these warnings and photographic evidence of a contravention is kept by the University for monitoring and further action if necessary.

  • If you've been given a ticket and how to appeal

You must follow the instructions on the rear of the notice or letter sent to you by the University.

Our Southend Campus is located in the town centre and is easily accessible by public transport. Should you need to travel by car, there are public car parks underneath University Square student accommodation and underneath South Essex College. There are also charging points for electric cars in London Road, outside University Square.

There is only limited visitor parking at our Loughton Campus.
