HRH The Duke of Kent has officially opened The Forum Southend-on-Sea, home to the University’s state-of-the-art Learning Hub and Lecture Theatre.

Developed through a unique three-way partnership, The Forum Southend-on-Sea is a joint project between the University, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and South Essex College to create the country’s first wholly integrated public, university and college library, with the latest teaching and learning facilities for our students.

By teaming up, the three partners have been able to provide far more for students, residents and visitors to the busy town.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Essex Professor Anthony Forster, who was presented to The Duke of Kent, said: “The Forum is an amazing building and absolutely integral to the success of our Southend Campus.

“For our staff and students, it offers a modern place to learn equipped with all the facilities they need and expect of a world class university. It is also the product of a strong partnership that exists between the University, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and South Essex College and our growing economic impact on South Essex.”

Campus Manager Zoe Manning, Registrar Bryn Morris and Southend IT Manager Matt Softly, who each played key roles in the successful development of this project, were introduced to The Duke of Kent.

As part of his visit The Duke of Kent, officially unveiled a sculpture of The Queen, positioned outside the ground floor Lecture Theatre. Ahead of the Royal visit Focal Point Gallery, based in The Forum, had unearthed footage of Prince George, Duke of Kent visiting Southend in 1929 which, at the current Duke’s request was showing on the outdoor Big Screen as he departed.
