Forum scoops major regional award

The University of Essex’s landmark building at its Southend Campus, The Forum, has scooped a top prize at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) East of England awards.

The Forum, which is a partnership building shared by the University, Southend Library Service and South Essex College, was the winner in the Community Benefit category.

This sought-after title puts The Forum into the national finals of the prestigious RICS awards in October.

It made such an impact in the regional RICS awards that it was also shortlisted in three other categories. It was also previously commended in the 2015 Civic Trust awards.

The Forum Southend-on-Sea was opened in September 2012 thanks to the unique partnership development which means it provides teaching and study space for University and College students, as well as the town’s central library.

Supplementing the existing campus buildings in the town centre, The Forum provides state-of-the-art teaching and learning space for the ever-growing number of University of Essex students.

In a joint statement, the partners said: “We are delighted that this ground-breaking project has been recognised so highly by such a renowned national organisation and we feel the award is very well-deserved.

“The Forum Southend-on-Sea daily demonstrates how it is a jewel in the crown of Southend’s regeneration.

Stephen Boniface who chaired the RICS Awards judging panel said: “The quality of all the entries this year has been outstanding, providing the judges with a wonderful selection of projects across the different categories.

“The RICS Awards demonstrate outstanding value whilst recognising all achievements, identifying excellence and realising the many talents of those involved in the projects.”
