On top of the world for social science

Essex is world famous for research into how we really live our lives

Three social science subjects at the University of Essex are ranked in the top 100 in the world in the elite QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Sociology ranks in the top 50, while Politics and International Studies, and Economics, feature in the top 100 and Linguistics in the top 150.

A further four subjects at Essex feature in the Top 200 – Law, Philosophy, Accounting and Finance, and English Language and Literature. Computer Science is ranked in the top 350.

QS evaluated more than 3,500 universities and ranked nearly 900. Over 100million citations were analysed. Essex features among the world’s elite institutions in nine subjects.

Executive Dean for the Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Todd Landman said: “The QS World University Rankings once again highlight our strength in the social sciences. The recent Research Excellence Framework showed we are in the top 20 of UK universities for research excellence and the top four for social science research.

“These latest rankings illustrate our position within the world elite for research-intensive universities. We are committed to making sure this world-leading research profile informs the education we offer our students so they develop the skills they need for a fulfilling and successful future.”
