Students voting in the annual Which? Student survey were asked if there were lots of different political groups and activities, such as meetings and demonstrations, and whether politics is a visible part of their university experience.

Chantel Le Carpentier, President of the University of Essex Students’ Union, said: “We have more than 15 political, or political-related societies on campus, and we encourage all our members to take control of their futures by embracing local, national and international political issues.

“This award is proof that even if students join us apathetic, they have every opportunity not to leave that way. Our students started being political in 1964 and have never stopped challenging.”

Professor Todd Landman, Executive Dean Social Sciences, added: “This is really exciting news, and is especially welcome in our 50th anniversary year when one of the research areas we are celebrating is politics. Our Department of Government is the only UK political science department to hold a Regius Professorship, and we have consistently been ranked top in the country for the quality of our research, so it’s great to receive recognition that this is impacting the transformative student experience we offer our students.”

Based on the views of more than 12,5000 undergraduate students, the annual Which? University student survey outlines the top-rated universities for sports local nightlife, creative and political scenes and a variety of student union activities.
