The Essex Sustainability Institute at the University of Essex is holding a public seminar exploring new forms of green activism.
The traditional image of green activism
As the world rushes to reduce carbon emissions, campaigners and researchers will discuss different methods of individual and corporate activism within the energy sector. The event, which is co-hosted by the University and the Swedish Energy Agency, takes place at Colchester’s firstsite on 4 November between 1pm and 7pm.
Speakers at ‘Renewable Energy Activism – From grassroots movements to green politics and corporate environmentalism’ will talk about their own activism from various backgrounds, such as alternative forms of renewable technologies, artistic work and energy communities.
Professor Steffen Boehm, Director of the Essex Sustainability, has published widely on various forms of activism, and is organising the event with Swedish researcher Dr Annika Skoglund.
Professor Boehm said: “The purpose of this event is to discuss various forms of activism in the energy sector, in our urgent quest to decarbonise our economies.”
Dr Skoglund added: “While the term ‘activism’ is most associated with violent protests and demonstrations, we think it is an essential part of any change project to explore how activism is repositioned to particular groups such as NGOs, governmental organisations, businesses and academia.”
‘Renewable Energy Activism – From grassroots movements to green politics and corporate environmentalism’ takes place at firstsite, Colchester, on 4 November from 1pm to 7pm, and includes a buffet dinner. Tickets cost £10 (students £5). Book your place online or telephone Professor Boehm: 01206 87 3843.
