Fellowship honour for Nigel
Colchester Campus
Professor Nigel South
Professor Nigel South has been made a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
He is among 34 leading social scientists who were today unveiled as new Fellows in recognition of making a substantial contribution to wider social science in a variety of contexts, including in higher education, government, funding councils, charitable foundations and think tanks.
Professor South is an internationally-recognised sociologist and criminologist, and is a founding figure of the study of ‘green’ criminology.
Speaking about the Fellowship, Professor South said: “This is a marvellous honour and I believe it recognises what we do very well at Essex, to take our excellence in social science into contributions to local communities and to global debates.”
The Academy of Social Sciences has about 1,000 individual Fellows, who are distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the public and private sectors. They are awarded Fellowship status after peer group review of the standing and impact of their work and evaluation of their contribution to wider social science.
Last year Professor South received a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his long-standing and distinguished international contribution to the field from the American Society of Criminology's Division on Critical Criminology.
