Commonwealth double for Essex
Adeseye Ogunlewe
Vicky Clow
Two Essex sports scholars have qualified to represent their countries at the Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow from 23 July to 3 August.
Vicky Clow, who is on the BA Acting and Stage Combat course at the Southend Campus, is one of three women representing Scotland in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Team Event.
Colchester Campus athlete Adeseye Ogunlewe has been selected for Nigeria’s sprint relay athletics team (4 x 100m) after he ran a new personal best of 10.23 seconds in Florida during warm weather training.
Both athletes have benefitted from the University’s sports scholarship programme, which offers a range of support services including sports science support, strength and conditioning training, physiotherapy, lifestyle advice, and a financial support package.
Dave Parry, Performance Sport Director at Essex said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Vicky and Ade, and we look forward to some outstanding performances from them both in Glasgow. We are starting to see a number of our sports scholarship athletes at the University achieve great results in elite sport, and this is evidence that our athlete-centred support programme is producing the outcomes for our students that we hoped it would."
