Cafe Scientifique: Passport in the tongue! Language testing of asylum seekers to determine origin

The latest free Cafe Scientifique lecture will be held on Wednesday 14 September.

Asylum seekers with no documents have only their bodies and their stories to back up their claims of persecution. For 10 years governments have been testing how they speak their native languages to help decide their cases. Professor Peter Patrick, from the Department of Language and Linguistics, has extensive involvement in UK cases and International monitoring and will discuss if this is a helpful use of expert knowledge, or just bad science.

The Minories Cafe, High Street, Colchester. Doors open at 6.30pm with the talk starting at 7pm.

Cafe Scientifique is designed to allow the general public to hear about the latest scientifque research and debate issues surrounding it.
