David Lammy MP to give insight into London riots at University talk

Colchester Campus

  • Listen to David Lammy's speech at the Lakeside Theatre

The riots across England in August 2011 are the theme of a lecture by David Lammy MP at the University next week.

The Tottenham MP’s talk – After the 2011 Riots: Where We’ve Got To and Where We Need to Go – will offer unique insights into political and community responses to the riots.

A year before the riots, Mr Lammy predicted the likelihood of violent eruptions and, after the crisis, he wrote Out of the Ashes: Britain after the Riots, a book drawing on his experiences of growing up in Tottenham – the area where the riots began.

The talk will be held on Thursday 20 March from 5.00-6.30pm at the Lakeside Theatre on the University’s Colchester Campus and is free and open to all.

Jointly sponsored by the Department of Sociology and Centre for Criminology, the Annual Undergraduate Lecture will look at some of the key issues resulting from the riots including how members of some of the hardest-hit communities have coped in the aftermath of the explosive riots that gave vent to the anger and frustrations of youth living there.
