Family affair at Essex graduation for Aylesbury academic

Dr Carter with her parents who met at Essex in the 1960s

An academic from Aylesbury yesterday celebrated graduating for the fourth time from the University of Essex.

Dr Elisabeth Carter’s graduation was also of special significance to her parents, who met as students at the University 30 years ago.

Dr Carter was awarded a PhD in Sociology from the University at yesterday’s ceremony in Colchester. Her parents Ian and Breina Carter both received BA Economics degrees from Essex in the mid-1970s.

Despite both studying at the same university, Dr Carter’s experience has been very different to that of her parents, who were at the University during a time of great political unrest on campus.

‘It was incredible hearing all their stories about the University at the time,’ explained Dr Carter. ‘Students today don’t seem to get so involved politically.’

This was the fourth time Dr Carter graduated from the University having previously been awarded a BA Psycholinguistics (2002), MA Criminology (2003), and MA Criminological Research (2005). Also celebrating will be her partner, Tim Day, a fellow Essex graduate (BA Sociology and Criminology, 2002, and MA Criminology, 2003).
