GB manager joins Essex as basketball coach

The current team manager of the GB senior men’s basketball squad has joined the University of Essex to head up coaching provision for its basketball teams.

Mark Lloyd

Our new Basketball Performance Coach Mark Lloyd

Mark Lloyd, who helped the GB men’s wheelchair basketball team win a bronze at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens when he was their team manager, has been appointed as Basketball Performance Coach.

His appointment forms part of a growing investment by the University in performance sport providing support to talented student athletes to ensure they reach their full academic and sporting potential. Students on sports scholarships receive unlimited access to the University’s sports facilities, sport science support through the Human Performance Unit and financial assistance.

Mark will split his time between the Colchester Institute where he is a sports lecturer and the University, where he will work with the Men’s and Women’s teams, including our three students on basketball scholarships.

Mark said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to maximise the performance aspect of the University teams. I can build on the solid base to put a performance programme in place to reap benefits in the next season and attract more good people.”

With only a few games left of the season, the men’s team is battling for promotion to League One.
