Former England volleyball star joins Essex

Students meeting together at our Colchester Campus

Alex Porter, centre, has joined the University of Essex as Performance Coach

Former International volleyball player Alex Porter has joined the University of Essex as Performance Coach.

His appointment forms part of a growing investment by the University in performance sport including three volleyball scholarships available this year.

A former England and Great Britain player, Alex has also played for professional clubs in Sweden, Austria and Holland. He coached the England South Boys team for the last three years winning two Gold Medals and one Silver medal in the UK School Games. Alex has also worked as a commentator and during the 2012 London Olympic was part of the BBC’s team covering volleyball.

Alex will work with the men’s and women’s volleyball performance teams as part of an athlete-focused programme alongside the University’s strength and conditioning coach, Centre for Sports and Exercise Science, Human Performance Unit, Colchester Physiotherapy Clinic, Lifestyle Advisors and Academic Mentors. This offers players the opportunity to develop and excel at their sport while studying for a degree at a world class university.

Sports scholarships at the University are highly sought after, and more information on our sports scholarships web pages.
