Students mark International Human Rights Day

Students at the University of Essex marked International Human Rights Day yesterday by writing the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on the iconic concrete squares of the Colchester Campus.

Joined by student volunteers, the team from the Human Rights Society wrote each article in English and another language creating a powerful reminder that despite being more than 60 years old, the basic human rights outlined in the UDHR must never be forgotten.

The annual ‘chalking of the steps’ between squares three and four has become a student-led tradition supported by the whole University community. It was one of a series of events organised by the Human Rights Society to mark International Human Rights Day which commemorates the signing of the UDHR on 10 December 1948.

The University has also recognised International Human Rights Day with a video showcasing the excellence and expertise in its world-renowned Human Rights Centre and a podcast series of interviews with Chevening Scholars studying human rights programmes at Essex.
