Thousands download game developed by Essex graduates

A game developed by Essex graduates for mobile and tablet devices after winning the Virgin Media 100 Day Game Project competition has been downloaded thousands of times since its release on iTunes and Google Play.

Super-Fluid is a puzzle-based platform game where the player takes control of a character which is able to change between three states: solid, liquid and gas. Each state has its own abilities which can be used to solve puzzles and defeat enemies in order to progress.

At Google Play Store the game has been downloaded more than 5,000 times and received a 4.1 star rating from users. Online reviewers have been excited by the game, praising its "simple, clever design", "unique game play" and the fact it is so "addictive".

One reviewer said: "Great game, great graphics and great concept. Amazing game!"

The Essex team called Surface Tension Studios included BSc Computer Science graduates Joe Le Grice and David Pearson with BSc Computer Games graduates Dan Scott and Guy Cass. They received £10,000 for winning the competition and immediately after graduating from Essex they started working to develop their game concept into a full working game at the Prototyping Studio at the University of Abertay Dundee,

STS won the competition after a gruelling selection process and they had to present their ideas to a panel of leading developers including Douglas Hare (CEO Outplay Entertainment), David Hamilton (Managing Director Digital Goldfish), Tom Champion (Community Manager Eurogamer), and Andrew Eades (CEO Relentless).

The judges were particularly impressed by STS’s enthusiasm and energetic delivery. STS were supported to turn their idea into a reality over the next 100 days by the judges plus games industry mentors including Craig Lawson from Ubisoft and Michael Nimmo from Codemasters. The game was then released at Eurogamer Expo.
