University helps students get on their bike

Colchester Campus

The University of Essex will hold a Big Bike Sale on Friday 16 January, on Square 5 of the Colchester Campus.

Students will get the chance to buy cheap bicycles, thanks to the support of Re-Cycle, Colchester’s own bicycle recycling charity. In addition, the Cyclists’ Touring Club (CTC) Cycle Champions will support the event with free refresher cycling activities for those who may not have been on a bike for a while. There will also be a Dr Bike present, to give a free bike MOT to those who bring their cycles along.

Jo Leyland, the University’s Transport Policy Co-ordinator, said: ‘We had a fantastic response to the last bike sale at Freshers' Fair in October. Over 50 people bought affordable bikes from Re-Cycle and 18 of them had not been on a bike for over a year. We hope to have lots more satisfied customers.’

CTC’s Richard Monk added: ‘The University is working with Re-Cycle and CTC to help get students cycling. This is just one of a number of initiatives helping to get more people to enjoy cycling, feel healthier and save money and time.’
