European Studies champion honoured

Professor Kirchner receives the award

Professor Emil Kirchner of the Department of Government has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES).
Professor Kirchner received the award at the UACES 2012 convention in Passau, Germany.
UACES chair Professor Richard Whitman said: “He is our most successful missionary in spreading the gospel of European Studies to all corners of the globe and his contribution to the development of European Studies in Asia is seminal.”
Professor Kirchner has worked at Essex since 1974 and has championed European Studies across the world including China, India and Pakistan . He has also undertaken visiting teaching and research positions in Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, China, and the United States.
