A free breakfast briefing event analysing the impact of the Olympics on the Eastern region’s economy is being held at the University of Essex’s Colchester Campus on Wednesday 26 September.

Professor Eric Smith from Department of Economics and Dr Tom Scotto from the Department of Government are among the leading experts speaking at the session which will explore the short and longer-term implications of London 2012, as well as the benefits to the UK ’brand’.

The issues set to be covered include the effect upon business confidence and productivity, the use of volunteers as well as the Army to deliver services, and the potential impact on Whitehall and upcoming elections.

Dr Scotto said: “London 2012 appears to have exceeded expectations. Before the event people were cynical and expected things to go wrong but in fact the Olympics and Paralympics seem to have gone very well. The question is whether that bounce in public opinion will continue and what the political and economic impact will be.”

Following the keynote presentations there will be a roundtable discussion and the opportunity for those attending to put their questions to the speakers and join in the debate

The breakfast briefing will be held in Lecture Theatre 4 of the Lecture Theatre Building.
