Three ground-breaking events are being organised in Colchester by The Essex Transitional Justice Network (ETJN) between Saturday 8 September and Friday 14 September.

Based at the University of Essex, ETJN is launching the week with a two day seminar, organised by Professor Sabine Michalowski, with funding from the British Academy. The seminar will act as a forum for discussing the pressing issue, of whether it is possible for countries moving from conflict to peace and democracy, to do so successfully without economic and social causes being taken into account.   

Experts, with ample field experience, and academics will discuss and develop a research agenda to advance the understanding of these complex issues which are of great significance in many countries.

Between Monday 10 and Wednesday 12 September, the first ETJN summer school will take place at the Colchester Campus on ‘Understanding the Economic and Social Dimensions of Transitional Justice’  with key experts from different parts of the world debating themes such as transitional justice and economic, social and cultural rights as well as economic crimes.

The week culminates with an international conference at Firstsite on Thursday and Friday, organised by Lorna McGregor and Dr Clara Sandoval of the University’s School of Law with funding from the Clemens Nathan Research Centre.

Dr Sandoval who is Co-Convenor of the ETJN said:”We are delighted to host these three events since they explore issues largely neglected but crucial to making a difference in the lives of victims, and to help states to establish solid democracies, rule of law and protection of human rights.”

This will be the first conference of its kind exploring the scope of the right to rehabilitation for victims of gross human rights violations, enabling them to attempt to move on with their lives.  The conference will consider some of the most important cases to date in Peru, East Timor, Colombia and Chile.
