Colchester première for film made by Hythe children
A film trailer, promoting the opportunities available at Hythe Community Centre and made by members of its K2 Youth Club, is to be screened on Wednesday 10 December.
The youngsters, aged between eight and 12 years old, took inspiration from the University of Essex’s current gallery exhibition, Now Showing, which features contemporary artists working in the medium of film. Local artist Penny Brice worked with them to create the film.
The University’s Arts Education Co-ordinator, Sarah Fairclough, organised the event which was part of a long-term programme of activities to inspire young people in the local community. She explained: ‘In the first session we talked about how films are made and compared a movie trailer to clips of some of the art films. We then got the children to plan a trailer for their youth club to tell people why they enjoyed it so much. They planned interview questions, decided which areas of the Centre should be filmed and created a storyboard for the film.
‘The children interviewed their friends and staff members and also shot activities they enjoyed like playing football and doing craft activities. They used camera angles that Penny had taught them.’
The film was edited by Penny Brice.
The project follows on from two previous successful projects at K2 Youth Club run by the University Gallery.
