Student aims for motor racing success
Colchester Campus
A student from the University of Essex has been balancing his end of year exams with competing in top flight competitive motor racing in the British Racing and Sports Car Club (BRSCC) National Formula Ford Championship.
Second year law student Neil Winn became interested in racing after marshalling at a motorcycle race on the Isle of Man when he was 17. His father agreed for him to become more involved in competitive racing on the condition that he got a place at Essex to study Law.
After passing his racing licence test at Silverstone, Neil took part in his first competitive race only a year ago and has since achieved third place in his National class championship, beating many experienced drivers and won his first National Class A event in March. This month he came second in two National events in Anglesey while doing exam revision in the pits in between races. Neil said: “Balancing both areas has been tough this year but I am proud to represent the University of Essex.”
Today, Neil is the leading racer in both the National and Northern Championship and will be competing in his next race at Brands Hatch in June and hopes to gain a National title this year with dreams of reaching Formula 1 or Indycar racing in the USA.
