Jazzing it up

Colchester Campus

Arun Ghosh is performing at the Lakeside Theatre this month.

The University’s autumn music programme concludes with jazz at the Lakeside Theatre.

Following performances by Mellow Baku and Polar Bear in October, then Empirical in November, the Lakeside welcomes the Arun Ghosh Indo-Jazz Sextet, at 8.30pm, Saturday 6 December. Conceived in Calcutta, bred in Bolton, matured in Manchester and now living in London, Arun Ghosh is a British-Asian clarinettist and composer whose musical vocabulary and vision reflects his rich heritage.

The Arun Ghosh Indo-Jazz Sextet offer original South Asian music with a contemporary jazz attitude, rocking urban beats and the passion of punk. Arun Ghosh's critically acclaimed debut album Northern Namaste was released in April and he is rapidly becoming one of the most talked about artists in British jazz.

The University’s autumn music programme ends with John Law, the University’s Jazz Musician-in-Residence, at 8.30pm, Wednesday 10 December. A prize-winning classical piano prodigy, who turned from being a concert pianist to pursue jazz and improvised music, John Law is acclaimed for both his solo work and his band with Sam Burgess and Asaf Sirkis, The Art of Sound.

John Law’s performance at the Lakeside Theatre also celebrates the successful release of his two solo piano CDs: The Ghost in the Oak (The Art of Sound Volume 2) and Chorale (The Art of Sound Volume 3).
