University of Essex scientist Dr David Hunter will discuss our use of telephones and what it tells us about the way people interact in our society in the first of a series of Colchester Café Scientifique events this month.

Dr Hunter’s seminar, ‘Telephone Usage Analysis Leads to New Systems and Sociological Insights,’ will be held at The Minories Bistro on 12 October, from 6.30pm (for 7pm start). Admission is free.

Dr Hunter, of the University’s School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, will explain how gaining a deeper understanding of people’s telephone interactions helps inform understanding of both telecommunications and sociology, as well as develop new methodologies and models.

Dr Hunter will also show how research from different academic disciplines yields new insights and research directions and how this telephonic research is even beginning to generate new perspectives on grooming between chimpanzees.
The Colchester Café Scientifique series is sponsored by the University of Essex. Events will run on the second Wednesday of every month between October and May.

Café Scientifique is a national movement encouraging informal and accessible debate about important scientific issues. The first Cafés were held in Leeds in 1998. Since then they have spread across the country with some 40 cafés now meeting regularly to hear scientists talk about their work and discuss it with diverse audiences.
