Human Rights expertise at work in Kosovo
Colchester Campus
The University of Essex is once again taking a lead at a high-level human rights conference in Kosovo.
Access to Justice brings together representatives of the Kosovan and British governments and experts from the University, including Professor John Packer, director of the Human Rights Centre and Professor Rainer Schulze of the Department of History.
The subjects under discussion include violence against women and civil law issues and Hajredin Kuqi, Minister of Justice and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo was among those expected to attend.
The University’s strong reputation in this Eastern European country stems from work Professor Packer did with the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe in 2008-09 training hundreds of Kosovan staff and local officials in managing post-conflict situations.
Building on this, 35 students from the University are heading to Kosovo for a week-long study tour this summer, following a successful trip last year.
This gives the students the opportunity to experience a fascinating country in transition and see numerous human rights related organisations working together.
