Colchester celebrates 40 years of queer

The panel

The University of Essex’s LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans) and Friends Society celebrated 40 years of diversity in Colchester earlier this month as part of its national award winning 40th Anniversary campaign.

An audience of more than 50 took part in a discussion at Colchester Town Hall exploring the history and development of sexual equality in the town.

A diverse panel, including current and former members of the LGBT Society and members of Colchester Outhouse, spoke about how attitudes to the LGBT community have changed, and how Colchester has been at the forefront of equality for decades.

The panel each gave their own personal account of their experiences of Essex ranging from the 1950s to the present day, including a lively account of the lifestyle in the University community. Discussions ranged from marriage equality, adoption and educating on homophobic bullying to creating straight-gay alliance groups. The evening concluded with a discussion on the issues that need to be considered for the future, including progressing trans-integration.

The event was in association with the University of Essex Students’ Union, Alumni Fund, Equality and Diversity Essex and Colchester Outhouse. To find out more about the University of Essex LGBT Society, visit: visit www.essexlgbt.co.uk.
