Miriam Glucksmann, Professor of Sociology at the University of Essex, has been selected to receive an Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Social Science at Stockholm University.

For more than 30 years Professor Glucksmann has contributed significantly to research in the areas of labour and the division of labour, production, distribution and consumption. Her work, such as the now classic books Women on the Line and Cotton and Casuals, demonstrate how preconceptions about gender, class and ethnicity are central to the ways in which labour, the economy and the market are structured, both historically and in the present day.

Professor Glucksmann has had strong links with Stockholm University for a number of years and has held the Kerstin Hesselgren Visiting Professorship post at the Department of Economic History during 2007.

Eamonn Carrabine, Head of Department of Sociology, said: “Miriam’s work is distinguished by its interdisciplinary nature and she moves seamlessly between different perspectives, methods and empirical areas, yet always maintaining an imaginative theoretical core to her work. She has inspired researchers from many different fields and we are delighted that her achievements have been recognised in this way.”

Professor Glucksmann joined the Department of Sociology in 1991, has held the position of Head of Department and has produced a number of notable publications during this time.
