Public invited to see plans for Clifftown Studios
Southend Campus
The University of Essex invites members of the public to see its plans to refurbish Clifftown United Reformed Church and create the new Clifftown Studios.
This open event runs from 4pm to 6pm on Monday 8 September, in the Students’ Union at the Gateway Building of the Southend Campus. Key members of University staff will also be available during this time to answer any questions.
The church was in poor condition when purchased by the University but the Listed Building Consent Application (recently submitted to Southend-on-Sea Borough Council by Thomas Ford and Partners, architects for the project) sets out the principles of how it will be refurbished to retain many original features. It will complement the University’s existing facilities in Southend by providing further space for the teaching, training, rehearsal and performance of East 15 Acting School students. Later plans include the conversion of the nave into an exciting performance space with seating for up to 200 and innovative lighting and technical facilities. This beautiful and flexible space will be used for student, professional and community performances.
