Stories, poetry and drama inspired by the work of the UK Data Archive as part of the Born Digital creative writing competition has been published online.

Staff, undergraduates and postgraduates took the opportunity to enter the competition which was a collaboration between UKDA and the Centre for Creative Writing in the Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies.

Sharmilla Woollam, PA to the Head of the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, won the competition for her short story 'The Recording Angel'. In second place was Oliver King with David Batho third and Jak Peake receiving an honorable mention.

The winning entries have now been published online at: www.data-archive.ac.uk/news-events/

'Born Digital' was chosen as the theme of the competition as it is an issue which is central to the work of UKDA. Information which is 'born digital' refers to material which originated inside a computer and poses very different challenges to those trying to archive and store that information for posterity.

Professor Marina Warner, from LiFTS and one of the judging panel, said: “I was delighted with the range and choice of different forms of expression within this narrow theme.”
