Land speed attempt countdown

University of Essex Sports Psychologist Dr Murray Griffin will be heading off to the US in the next two weeks as he attempts to break the land speed record on a motorcycle – and raise money for national charity, Riding for the Disabled Association.

After months of planning, preparation and testing Dr Griffin and his support team will be travelling to the Bonneville salt flats to compete in the annual Bonneville Speed Week in August.

Using a Modified 2003 Nitrous injected Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle Dr Griffin needs to reach average speeds of 215mph over two attempts in order to beat the current record in his motorcycle class.

An experienced motorcyclist, Dr Griffin has competed on motorcycles for over ten years and reached speeds of 200mph + several times previously.

Preparations have been going well and, with some last minute testing now taking place before they leave, Dr Griffin is confident that he can achieve the record. He said: ‘The team have spent months working on the bike to make sure it is in the best possible shape to endure the harsh conditions at Bonneville, including high altitude and the uneven salt surface. We’re now completely focused on to getting to the US and taking part in the Speed Week.’

The annual Speed Week attracts hundreds of competitors every year to race along the unique natural surface. Dr Griffin and his team are just one of three UK based teams, and the only motorcycle competitor, flying out to the US to attempt the record.
