The Race for Life on the Colchester Campus

What does the University of Essex mean to the Colchester community? A new publication, launched today to coincide with national Universities Week, describes the many different ways the University is working with and having an impact on the local community.

With some 10,000 students,1,900 staff and a £120 million a year turnover, the University has a significant effect on the local economy, but its reach goes beyond education, training and employment into areas including culture, sport, and volunteering.

The 12-page booklet, called Part of your community, is being circulated to libraries, schools, local politicians and public buildings to inform the people of Colchester about the role the University plays in the economic, social and cultural development of the Borough. It also outlines how the University’s world-leading research affects both local and global communities in areas like health, technology and the environment.

A feature will also appear in the summer issue of Colchester Borough Council’s magazine The Courier, which is distributed to every home in Colchester.

Universities Week is a national campaign to highlight the crucial role universities play at the heart of society. It runs from 14 to 20 June, and will showcase the ways in which universities underpin the economy, and drive forward growth, prosperity and development. The campaign covers health, the arts, sport, education, development, the environment and links with business. It will also highlight some of the ‘big ideas’ coming out of universities. It is being supported by more than 100 universities and organisations throughout the UK.
