University paves the way for more cycling

Colchester Campus

A new cycle path at the University of Essex’s Colchester Campus will be officially opened by children from the University’s Day Nursery at 1pm on Wednesday 28 April 2010.

Amongst the special guests at the official opening will be Mayor of Colchester Councillor Henry Spyvee. The new cycle path will complement routes already established by Essex County Council and Colchester Borough Council, as part of the national ‘Cycling Town’ programme.

The University was awarded £70,000 in ‘matched funding’ from the national Cycling Town project to assist with the financing of the project, and the new path forms one of the many sustainable ways that students and staff can travel onto the Campus. The project’s funds are drawn from a national initiative to encourage cycling, Cycling England, which in 2008 the Government gave £140 million to the new Cycling Town, which include Colchester.

This successful bid for the University means that further improvements to cycling facilities on the Campus can also go ahead, including a new cycle park.
