With modules taught in both the Department of Government and School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, it equips future social scientists with a range of skills in advanced data science and artificial intelligence that will enable them to undertake social sciences research, making use of increasingly large and complex data sets.

Our MSc Applied Data Science is a conversion course specifically designed for students without prior experience of university-level mathematics or statistics, who want to be part of our fast-growing digital economy (students with some mathematical experience may consider our MSc Data Science and its Applications). The course will build upon your undergraduate degree in the humanities, social or life sciences, or business studies, giving you postgraduate-level skills in essential data science methods with various applications, covering case studies and applications of AI and data using a balance of methods and practical application.

Our Postgraduate Diploma Optimisation and Data Analytics is aimed at those with a first degree in which the major subject was mathematics, and we expect you to have prior knowledge of statistics – for example significance testing or basic statistical distributions – and operational research such as linear programming. Postgraduate Diplomas last for six to nine months (full-time) and include the modules and assessed work of a Masters, without a dissertation.

Our PhD Data Science is an advanced research degree within our School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science and we have staff members available to act as supervisors across a number of areas within data science.

Our four-year PhD in Data Science (with research and communication skills) course has been specifically designed to support students, whilst also offering additional support for UK students who do not have English as a first language. We recognise and understand the importance of continuing professional development for students and have designed this course for students who do not have English as a first language and may have been studying in a different country, or out of a traditional academic environment for some time.

An Integrated PhD provides a route into research study if you do not have a Masters degree, or have very little research training. It enables you to spend your first year completing a Masters-level qualification, followed by a full-time PhD studied over 3-4 years.
