Students Staff

Vice-Chancellor's welcome

Anthony Forster Essex was built on philanthropy. In the early 1960s, the site of our Colchester Campus was a gift from Essex County Council – and a public appeal brought in over £1 million in just six months to help us create our University.

Some of our supporters have been with us ever since and more supporters join us every year as we pursue our equal commitment to excellence in education and research. Thanks to philanthropy we are thriving.

Our research has global impact. People here are working to increase crop yields to feed the world, protecting coral reefs from climate change, and developing artificial blood to be available across the world and at natural disasters. Scholarships and research grants are two of the ways in which we are supporting emerging researchers, carrying out life-changing research.

An Essex Education

We offer a research-led education and typifying our equal commitment to excellence in education and research, we expect our staff to be great researchers and great teachers. Thanks to our supporters we are able to make an Essex Education available to the widest possible range of students. For example since 2008, we have worked with one of our international partners, Santander, to deliver almost 200 scholarship and internship opportunities.

Campus life

Essex's reputation for student life is based on the amazing range of extra-curricular activities we offer: clubs and societies, sports, the arts, and an extensive programme of volunteering. These opportunities are essential to producing dynamic students that are able to take on the world. Our alumni have contributed over £500,000 to student experience projects, and now help to matchfund students conducting their own fundraising via our University crowdfunding platform, Click.

I hope that you will want to join us in opening up opportunities for young, brilliant minds, in working together on ground-breaking research, and in creating a better world.
