Global outlook

Sarah Oatham

It is a privilege to be a member of such a strong community that is clearly making a difference across the world. We are all truly Essex.

Sarah Oatham, University Relationship Branch Manager, Santander

A unique offering

The Essex Spirit exists far beyond our three campuses. From the beginning, we set out to be a hub for scholars from around the world, where international learning and perspectives could inform and enhance each other.

We continue to build upon that ethos. Our human rights work makes an impact on policy and practice around the world. Our collection of art from Latin America (ESCALA) is the only collection in Europe dedicated to modern and contemporary art from Latin America.

Built on philanthropy

Our community supports this global outlook through scholarships, international partnerships and funding for student opportunities abroad.

Since 2008, we have worked with one of our key international partners, Santander, to deliver almost 200 scholarship and internship opportunities as part of their Santander Universities programme. As a result, students have gone on to work with companies including the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Centre for Justice and International Law in Brazil and Santander.

Making a difference

Today, our global impact includes:

  • our students undertaking challenging fieldwork in Nepal
  • our researchers working to preserve coral reefs in Indonesia
  • students and researchers at our Human Rights Centre Clinic supporting human rights practitioners to address issues across the world from Mexico to Sri Lanka

With your help, we can continue to foster our international community and global outlook. Want to know more? Get in touch.
