Women of the Future Appeal

Dr Aisha Gill

This is a place where you can become who you really want to be, a place where diversity is respected, valued and nurtured. Essex gave me wings to fly – it is an empowering place to study and grow.

First ever Chancellor's Appeal

The Women of the Future Appeal is the first Chancellor's Appeal in Essex's history. Led by Chancellor Shami Chakrabarti, it seeks to raise funds for 25 masters scholarships at Essex. Places will be awarded to bright and inspirational women from across the world, who will use what they learn here to effect positive change in their communities.

With your help, we aim to raise £500,000, an investment we know will reach far beyond the 25 women, and into the communities they will support and lead.

Why women?

Over the past four decades the number of women accessing higher education has grown significantly, but women are still not on an equal footing to men in the workplace.

At Essex we know that ability is not determined by gender or by where you happen to be born.

These scholarships will equip 25 women from around the world with the skills and knowledge needed to empower them to become leaders and drivers of change in their communities.

Essex Women

Essex has a proud tradition of educating amazing women. Our women graduates are already changing the world - alumni like Dr Shirin Chaudhury, the first woman speaker of Bangladesh's parliament and an Essex scholarship student herself, Dr Aisha Gill, an activist and academic working to end violence against women, and Carry Somers, a leading climate-change and Fairtrade pioneer.
